Kearin family reunion held in Ramona
07/21/2009
More than 152 relatives from four generations of the Michael and William Kearin families met in Madison over the Fourth of July for the Kearin family reunion. All the attendees descended from Michael Aloynious Kearin and William Igatius Kearin.

The family began hosting reunions in 1984, when they gathered in Thermopolis, Wyo. Since then, the family has met every five years.

Members of six different extended families attended, including people from California, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Montana, Washington, Louisiana, Texas and South Dakota. Eighty percent of the relatives flew into the Midwest for the reunion.

The three oldest reunion attendees were Elaine Kearin from Madison, Genevieve Reinicke from San Diego, Calif., and Irene Sloan from Miles City, Mont.

The majority of the relatives stayed in Richardson Hall on the campus of Dakota State University. Others slept at the AmericInn and the Super 8 Motel in Madison.

While in South Dakota, members of the Kearin family toured farmsteads in and around Ramona, Madison and Badus. The family also had seven entries in the 4th of July parade in Ramona.

The younger members of the Kearin family (ages 10 and under) participated in their first snipe hunt. Each child bought a 25-cent snipe license, was given a snipe flash light, snipe food and a snipe bag. After the game warden signed and issued the snipe licenses, a practice session to learn how to call in snipes was held. The cool rainy spring and the damp ground made tracking the snipe in and around the DSU campus very easy.

On July 3 at Nicky's Restaurant, a traditional Irish auction was held. Family members brought in Irish-themed items for the auction. Vertus Reinicke and John Janda from San Diego and Bill Sloan from Montana served as guest auctioneers. The auction proceeds will be used as startup money for the 2014 Kearin family reunion.

Family member Adel Crawford from San Diego designed T-shirts for the event. The shirts were printed by Power Promotions of Madison. Photocopying for the reunion was all done locally.

Among those in attendance was NFL football player Steve Neal of the New England Patriots.
