Madison Night Out scheduled Aug. 3
| | | | |
Madison will join an estimated 12,000 communities across the United States and even around the world when its residents participate in the local National Night Out event on Aug. 3. Organizers have scheduled a citywide picnic from 5-7 p.m. at Library Park, where adults and youngsters can play, listen to musical entertainment and eat a free meal. National Night Out was created in 1984 by the leaders of National Association of Town Watch as a means of promoting local anti-crime efforts. About a dozen groups will asset with Madison's event, which is designed to inform the public, promote safety and strengthen the efforts against crime. City officials will cook and serve hot dogs, beans and chips while the Country Cousins 4-H'ers offer face-painting and kids take rides on the DARE train. The South Dakota Highway Patrol will provide demonstrations of its vehicle rollover simulator, equipment that mimics the dangers of highway accidents. Organizers have scheduled entertainment that includes the S.D. Old-Time Fiddlers, Harmonikatz, Kiwanis Barbershop Quartet and vocalist Kelli Wollmann. Other local law enforcement groups will join the state troopers in hosting the event, including the Madison Police Department; Lake County Sheriff's Department; and S.D. Game, Fish & Parks. Additional emergency-response organizations will participate, such as the Madison Fire Department, Lake County Search & Rescue, Madison Ambulance and Lake County Dispatch. Several more support and auxiliary bodies will contribute to the local Night Out event, including Lake County REACT, Madison Explorers, Lake County Emergency Management, and the Local Emergency Planning Committee/Citizen Corps.
