DSU student to start computer support business
By CHUCK CLEMENT, Staff Reporter 11/20/2009
Joe Kahler
Madison-area computer users will have another repair option available if their system crashes or a nuisance virus worms its way into their software.

Joe Kahler, a freshman at Dakota State University, plans to bring Joe's Repair with him when he makes his move to Madison from Brookings. Kahler, 25, performed computer support and general repair work in the Worthington, Iowa, area for about nine years before moving to South Dakota.

He enrolled in the computer network security program at DSU this fall and plans to start his business by making visits to homes and businesses that need assistance. Kahler would also like to open a shop locally in the future.

Kahler wants to assist customers by performing repairs on computer hardware and software for equipment that ranges from desktop computers to Netbooks. The computer-related services he plans to offer include software maintenance and virus debugging.

"I've found that the most common work that people need is maintenance on (computer) systems, defragmenting and help with virus and malware problems," Kahler said. "Next on the list are Windows errors and systems crashes. That covers about 80 percent of the usual problems."

He can provide assistance with other electronic devices that malfunction, such as game consoles, DVD players, MP3 players and personal digital assistants (PDAs). Kahler said the MP3s and PDAs sometimes hit a "brick" state in which their systems lock up and refuse to function properly.

Kahler will help computer owners install and upgrade their software and improve their computer systems.

His future plans after earning a bachelor's degree include completing DSU's program for obtaining a master's in computer information systems. Kahler is also interested in teaching.

He plans to operate a Web site that will offer information about his services at www.joesrepair.net. Persons can call Kahler 605-691-1817 or e-mail repair@joesrepair.net.
