The superintendent of the Oldham-Ramona School District told the district's patrons Tuesday night that landowners should decide soon on what the new boundaries of a divided school district should look like before a written plan is sent to Pierre. Superintendent John Bjorkman told about 65 persons attending a public-input meeting in the Oldham gym that if landowners want to revise the old boundaries of the Oldham and Ramona school districts, they should make their decisions known to him during the next several weeks. Madison businesses that sell packaged alcohol will have the ability to sell on Sundays, following the publication of ordinances that were approved by city commissioners. On Monday, the commissioners unanimously approved allowing off-sale alcohol retailers to sell on Sunday and Memorial Day. The off-sale license holders are still prohibited from selling distilled spirits or wine between 2-7 a.m. and at any time on Christmas Day. Mayor Gene Hexom told the commissioners that he had not received any "expressions of concern" about the change in municipal liquor laws. Commissioner Karen Lembcke confirmed with Jeff Heinemeyer, city finance officer, that the revisions to municipal alcohol laws will go into effect 20 days after the new ordinance is published. Madison and the immediate area came close to tornadic weather conditions on Friday night. "We got excessively lucky," said Don Thomson, Lake County emergency management director. "We were so close to tornado conditions." Full Story
West Center Baptist Church was renovated and rebuilt by 1980. That structure continues today. It was modified in 1991 following a minor fire. Large doors were installed and the entrance was changed to the balcony at that time. Full Story
