Ed Harter Classic is here Friday, Saturday
By DAN HOLSWORTH, Sports Editor 11/13/2008
Dakota State's Trojans will have as good a shot at winning as any of the three other teams entered in this weekend's annual Ed Harter Classic.

The Trojans have produced a 2-1 early-season record and will put that up against Hastings (Neb.) College (2-2) in Friday's final game, which tips off at 8 p.m. in the DSU Fieldhouse.

The Harter Classic's opener features Morningside College (2-0) of Sioux City, Iowa, taking on Mayville (N.D.) State University (0-2) at 6 p.m.

Saturday's games feature Hastings going up against Mayville State at 3:30 p.m., followed at 5:30 p.m. with the Morningside-DSU game. DSU Coach Wade Kooiman is encouraged by his Trojans' early-season play.

"We have played well in stretches -- good enough to get a couple of wins," said Kooiman. "Against the great teams, however, we need to finish games more assertively. One of our greatest strengths has been our depth. It seems as though it has been a couple of different guys stepping up each night. We will need that to continue as we move into the next three games, facing nationally-ranked opponents.

``Sean Baitinger, Jason DeZeeuw and Derek Kreutzfeldt have paced us offensively, and we have shot the ball from the perimeter well enough in these early games to be successful," he said. "Our defense has been pretty solid. Our pressure is good, and our interior defense has been great, thanks to Brian Bolin."

That said, Kooiman seeks improved play in a number of areas. "We will need to get more points in the paint, convert the easy ones and spend more time at the free throw line to be more consistent offensively," added Kooiman.

DSU has a two-game win string, having beaten Mt. Marty College 79-67 and Waldorf College 60-57 after dropping its opener 88-80 to Dana College.

Hastings, the Trojans' first-round opponent, fell to .500 when it lost to Sterling College 81-79.

Mayville's Comets are looking at getting back on track after losing to Dakota Wesleyan 76-68.

Morningside raised its record to 2-0 last Saturday with a win over Johnson & Wales.
