Sioux Falls physicians caring for Courtney Moose of Brandon after her Tuesday automobile accident have determined that she has a number of broken bones, but doctors have not found injuries that are more severe. Moose's father, Larry French of rural Madison, said Thursday that his daughter's injuries were serious but her condition could have been worse after her sports-utility vehicle was hit by a semi near Sioux Falls. He and his wife Ila were in attendance at the hospital Thursday morning. "Under the circumstances, she's doing quite well," Larry French said. "Her injuries could have been much worse." According to French, his daughter received neck injuries with broken bones in all seven cervical vertebrates. However, he reported that doctors had not found damage to Moose's spinal cord and she had demonstrated movement among her extremities. "Everything works, but she's seriously banged up," French said. He said Moose had several other broken bones, including ribs on her left side, a scapula (shoulder blade) and a humerus (upper arm). French added that his daughter faced a long period of recuperation from the injuries. Moose's vehicle collided with a semi on Tuesday afternoon at a Minnehaha County intersection. The semi driver faces a charge of failure to yield. The S.D. Highway Patrol reported her as the only injured party from the accident. Moose, 33, a family practice physician, and her husband Justin are Brandon residents. He is the son of Roger and Nancy Moose of Madison.
