Sportsmen have a new place to look for guns and shoppers have a new place to look for bargains with the opening of R&A Pawn, Guns Sales and Service in downtown Madison.

The shop is owned by Roger and Andrew Hinchliffe with help behind the counter from their father, Don.

“I wanted more than a gun shop,” said Roger of his decision to incorporate a pawn shop with firearms sales and repair.

The store opened on Aug. 2 and, according to Don, has since been swamped with guns to repair.

“I didn’t know there were that many guns in Madison,” Don said.

The shop does repairs on rifles, shotguns and pistols with an emphasis on firearms safety. Roger, who has been working on guns for five years, said common problems he sees in his repair shop are people who fail to oil their guns or over-oil them.

Roger also customizes guns, changing out the hand guard on an AR-15 or adding a scope. “He builds guns to people’s specifications,” Don says of his son. Andrew is learning about gun repair.

Opening a gun shop means complying with a river of federal red tape.

“We are very strict,” Don said. Even if the paperwork is correct, “If I don’t have the right feeling about them, they’re not getting a gun.”

The business owners’ plans for the future include opening a gun range where the proper use of firearms and safety procedures can be taught.

“What we’re trying to do is teach people how to maintain a gun,” Don said.

The pawn portion of the business offers 30-day loans on items customers bring in to secure the loan.

Aside from firearms, the store is stocked with a wealth of new and used items including tools, knick-knacks, ladders, a log splitter, picture frames, video games, bird houses, Christmas ornaments, used dolls and books, new windows, glassware and bows and arrows.
