For 71 years, East River Electric Power Cooperative has been working alongside our member systems in providing safe, affordable and reliable power across the region. Our founders understood that together we can do more than any individual system could ever achieve alone. Through our collective effort, we have supplied the region with low-cost hydropower and an increasing mix of renewable energy, implemented innovative shared services, built complex infrastructure to ensure reliability, lowered risk for members and much more.

Our main campus is located in Madison, and our workforce includes 150 full-time employees, with 132 of those employees working in our Madison facilities. East River is proud to be a part of the Madison community and provide transmission services to the city’s electric utility, but we reach far beyond our local area. We are the wholesale energy supplier for cooperative consumers in nearly every county in eastern South Dakota and several counties in western Minnesota. We’re made up of 24 local cooperatives and one municipal electric system. Our members include Sioux Valley Energy, Central Electric, Dakota Energy, Kingsbury Electric and more. Those members made a promise to each other to create East River to secure energy and distribute it for the benefit of all of our members.
